Chessmaster 5000 Frequently Asked Questions
Q:If a user installs Chessmaster 1.0.2 from the released CD and did not previously have DirectX 1 or 2, when launching the program a message box entitled "Error Starting Program" appears with the message "A required .DLL file, DPLAY.DLL, was not found." Clicking on the message box's "OK" button terminates the program launch.
A. DirectX 3 uses different file names than DirectX 2. Copy (do not rename) the file DPLAYX.DLL and rename the copy DPLAY.DLL. Make sure this file (DPLAY.DLL) is in the windows/system directory OR download and install DirectX 2 from Microsoft.
Q. When copying the move list to another application (such as Microsoft Word) the results appear incorrect or corrupted. May also occur when copying other parts of the program as well.
A. The program uses the Chessmaster font. The application the entry was copied to, such as Microsoft Word, is not using the Chessmaster font. Load the Chessmaster font and the entry will look correct. You may also try a notation other than Figurine.
Q. CM5000 caused an invalid page fault in Module KERNEL32.DLL @..' (memory address may vary)
A. Reported only when you eject the CD while the program is running, then quit the program which generates "Error reading CD ROM... " Press ESC to cancel. Other invalid page fault errors may have system specific causes. Contact Technical Support for further assistance.
Q. "ODBC Microsoft Access 7.0 driver login failed" error message followed by the "Login" Dialog box will occur (asking for the password when trying to enter the database) A. Regardless of which installation was chosen, the file for the Database Feature of CM5000 is found on the CD ROM disc. - Click the `Setup' Option button in the right area of the box.
- In the following ODBC Microsoft Access 7.0 Setup Dialog box, verify that Data Source Name: is "Games" and Description: is "Chessmaster 5000 database".
- Choose the "Select" Option button.
- When you get the Select Database box, verify and select if necessary:
Database Name games.mdb Directories
:\cddata
Read Only Option "On"
Exclusive Option "On"
- Click "OK" to exit this box, then "OK" to exit to the previous box.
- Choose the `Close' Option button to exit the Data Sources dialog box.
- Start CM 5000 and choose the File Menu, Database option to verify if the symptom has appeared.
If the problem persists after this, make certain that you have covered ALL the basic
troubleshooting steps and make note of the following items:
- CD ROM drive manufacturer, model number, and drive speed (2X,4X,6X,8X).
- Files and Buffers values.
- Which install was done, MAX or MIN?
- Did the install proceed normally without any error conditions, particularly any ODBC
Installation error messages? If there were any error messages, record the exact message and
the response.
- Any other item that appeared to be "out of place".
Q. When loading .PGN games saved by Chessmaster or another program, it doesn't load the game information and title properly. For example, a PGN file Chessmaster saves appears as: ---begin snippet--- [Title "Chris vs Chessmaster 8-4-1996"] [White "Chris"] [Black "Chessmaster"] [Event "Test Game"] [Date "8-4-1996"] 1. e4 c5 2. d4 cxd4 ---end snippet--- This example is from a saved Chris vs. Chessmaster game. The Chessmaster will only take the first letter of each of those informational lines. The game will be "C vs. C" played on "8" at "T."
A. Corrected in 1.0.2 upgrade.
Q. Loading a saved PGN file results in an error message.
A. Corrected in 1.0.2 upgrade.
Q. DLL File error
A. Other applications running at the time of install resulted in corrupt or incomplete installation. Delete the prior install from your system using the Un-Install Feature. Then holding down CTRL+ALT+DEL bring up the Close Program Listing. Make sure that the _only_ things running are Explorer and SysTray. End Task everything else until only Explorer and Systray are left. Proceed with reinstalling the program. Your other applications will return when you reboot your system but, for the install procedure we need to concentrate all resources on ChessMaster. At that point, if you are still experiencing problems you will need to copy the reported dll file to the Windows subdirectory on the hard drive to see if this will correct the problem.
Q.Q. Using 'Location' or 'Openings' in the database query results in '0' games found (feature not functional).
A. Corrected in 1.0.2 upgrade.
Q. How do I change the size of the transposition or hash table that the CM5000 engine uses?
